Facade Lighting – Museum of the Future, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Details:
Location: Dubai, UAE
Year: 2022
The Museum of the Future (MOTF) in Dubai stands as a structure from another realm, projecting Dubai towards a future of progress and innovation while preserving a strong link to local Arab culture. The museum is an oval, 77-meter-high steel edifice without pillars, flaunting a remarkable facade adorned with Arabic script. Cutting-edge lighting technology was employed to illuminate this groundbreaking architectural masterpiece: bespoke LINEARlight FLEX DIFFUSE LED light strips, paired with OPTOTRONIC LED drivers and DMX lighting control from Traxon e:cue. Decisive for the project’s realization was not only the excellence in quality but also the comprehensive support provided by Inventronics technical experts.
A Demanding Project
The Museum of the Future is presented as the world’s most beautiful building. Its oval facade adorned with poetic calligraphy is always in the spotlight, and the related lighting had to harmonize with this singular architecture, necessitating not only superior light quality but also reliability and adaptability. The curved steel sheet facade, harsh outdoor temperatures, and the need to install lighting among more than 800 panels and glass were significant challenges. The Inventronics solution was possible thanks to on-site surveys from our Field Application Engineers and technical changes implemented by our R&D department to produce a fully compliant lighting system for the extreme environmental outdoor conditions, thus representing the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics.
Essential Teamwork and Live Testing
The offer of a complete and durable solution, the guarantee of long-lasting peace of mind thanks to a 7-year system warranty, and a long history of great customer service and support were the three convincing elements that persuaded the lighting designers to cooperate with the Inventronics team. Inventronics worked in close collaboration with all the parties involved, defining the full concept of the project from the beginning. The project team embraced the architects’ design idea and effectively addressed crucial concerns regarding installation, heat management, UV radiation, water exposure, and compatibility between LED light strips and architectural details. This activity resulted in a bespoke solution, passing a series of laboratory and live tests to meet the challenging application requirements.
“We are honored to have had the opportunity to work with Chris Coulter and the entire Buro Happold team on this project. Together, we have contributed to bringing something completely new to life, both in concept and in execution.” – Mohammed Mossad, Inventronics Middle East Managing Director.
An Impressive Outcome
The museum showcases 16 kilometers of OSRAM LINEARlight FLEX DIFFUSE, designed and manufactured by Inventronics. The LED modules were customized and segmented specifically for the project. OSRAM OPTOTRONIC LED drivers and DMX dimmers were installed to allow precise addressing via a DMX controller from Traxon e:cue. This setup enables selective illumination of specific words on the facade. Additionally, Inventronics provided another system for the indoor lighting, composed of the LINEARlight FLEX DIFFUSE side-emitting in combination with the OPTOTRONIC DALI Drivers, for the integrated illumination of the wonderful helicoidal stair in the museum hall, a true design gem. In sum, the lighting design serves as a focal point for highlighting the building’s stunning architecture.
